Karii AA- Washed - Kenya (Filter Roast)
The Karii factory, established in 1984, is situated between the coffee regions of Nyeri and Kirinyaga. It serves 600 smallholder farmers, with each farmer having an average of 180 coffee trees. Most farmers in the area grow the SL-28 or SL-34 varieties, commonly found in Kenya, and have started using shade trees to mitigate the effects of climate change. Managed by the Mutira Farmer Cooperative Society, which oversees several regional coffee factories including Kagumo, Mutitu, and Kiangundu, the society has approximately 4,000 members. The factory is located 70 miles from Nairobi and 1.5 miles from Kerugoya town. Processing is done using water from the Rundu river: Ripe cherries are delivered by farmer members, depulped using an Aagard disc pulper, and dried to below 12% moisture. The final milling takes place at a facility near Karatina town, in the central Kenya coffee mills.
